Jela Hasler

Born 1986, lives in Zurich (Switzerland).

Jela studied Photography in Zurich and Istanbul as well as Video in Lucerne. Her graduation film «Kein Porno» («No Porn») was co-produced by Swiss National Television and screened at several festivals (eg CPH:DOX) and awarded at Ozu Festival as best Short Documentary.

Her next short «The Meadow», a subtile view on a conflicted area focussing on a herd of cattle on the border between Israel and Syria, premiered at Locarno Festival in the Pardi di Domani section in 2015 and was invited to a high number of festivals worldwide, including IDFA, Tampere and Hot Docs, as well as awarded with several prizes.

She recently finished her latest short, «Le sens de la marche», a particular view on the state of emergency in Paris; the film is now being submitted to festivals.

For spring 2017 she was awarded an artist in residency scholarship at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, where she amongst other things developed the short «Le sens de la marche», and started collaborating with French-Malagasy musician Haga Ratovo for a project called «Golden Bounty», a video series for a musical project planned to be evaluated both online as well as in a live performance.

In autumn 2017, she‘s been invited to the Zurich Film Festival‘s Masterclass as well as to the «New Screen Talents» at Geneva International Film Festival.

She‘s currently working on the development of a short fiction, and has been invited to develop and direct one episode of a feature documentary initiated by Dschoint Ventschr.

Jela is a member of the Swiss Filmmaker‘s association (ARF / FDS) as well as the regional association Zürich für den Film. She‘s also a board member and the current general secretary of Pro Short, the Swiss association for short films, engaging to build a lobby for short films in Switzerland.
